AION V

2026-10-03 02:00:10

Model Overview

The AION V is a global strategic all-electric C-segment SUV under the GAC AION marque. First launched in June 2020, the model has undergone several iterations, including the AION V Plus and the all-new 2024 next-generation model. Drawing design cues from the "Tyrannosaurus Rex," the second-generation AION V is pitched as a "new rugged smart SUV." Developed collaboratively by R&D teams across Milan, Los Angeles, Shanghai, and Guangzhou, it is built as a pure-electric family SUV catered to mainstream global buyers.

The second-generation AION V made its official market debut in July 2024, offering a total of seven variants with official prices ranging from RM129,800 to RM189,800. Serving as a core pillar in AION’s global expansion, the AION V is already on sale in markets like the Philippines, Thailand, and Chile, with plans underway to enter the UK and other European markets.

The lineup offers three CLTC-rated electric ranges: 520 km, 650 km, and 750 km. Key rivals include pure-electric C-segment SUVs such as the BYD Song PLUS EV and Volkswagen ID.4.

Design Language

The second-generation AION V showcases an all-new design language dubbed "Blade Shadow Kinetic". Up front, the vehicle carries a bold, boxy stance with a large blanked-off grille, asymmetrical headlamp units, and vertically stacked LED daytime running lights (DRLs). The side profile features flush pop-out door handles, blacked-out A-pillars, and chunky roof rails, creating a floating roof aesthetic. Round the back, it features full-width LED taillights, a registration plate recess integrated into the rear bumper, and a faux diffuser garnish below. The SUV rides on 18-inch multi-spoke alloy wheels wrapped in 215/55 R18 tyres.

Inside, the cabin features a symmetrical dashboard dominated by a 14.6-inch floating infotainment touchscreen, paired with a sleek, minimalist digital instrument cluster. Three interior colourways are on offer: Hongpao Iced Tea, Raw Coconut Latte, and Cold Brew Black Coffee, accented with extensive soft-touch upholstery. Available in multiple exterior paint options, the SUV measures roughly 4,605 mm in length, 1,854 mm (or 1,876 mm) in width, and 1,660 mm (or 1,686 mm) in height, with a 2,775 mm wheelbase.

Powertrain & Performance

Under the skin, the second-generation AION V is driven by a front-mounted single permanent magnet synchronous motor in a front-wheel-drive (FWD) configuration across the board. Depending on the variant, the electric motor produces 150 kW (around 204 PS) and 165 kW (around 224 PS), with peak torque rated at 240 Nm and 205 Nm, respectively. Top speed is capped at 160 km/h, with the 520 km variant completing the 0-100 km/h sprint in an official 7.9 seconds.

Juicing the motor is GAC's proprietary Magazine Battery 2.0 (LFP chemistry), paired with an energy management heat pump system with a broad operational temperature range of -30°C to 55°C. Battery capacities come in 62.2 kWh, 74.98 kWh, and 75.26 kWh options, delivering CLTC-rated ranges of 520 km, 650 km, and 750 km, respectively. Average energy consumption is rated at 12.8 kWh/100 km. A 3.3 kW (or 7 kW) Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) reverse charging function is standard across the range.

Chassis & Handling

Underneath, the AION V rides on front MacPherson struts and a rear multi-link (five-link) independent suspension setup. The five-link rear layout is a rarity in this segment; its bespoke chassis tuning improves bump absorption by roughly 30% over a conventional torsion beam axle while reducing body roll in corners by 25%.

Steering is handled by an Electric Power Steering (EPS) system, while stopping power comes from front ventilated discs and rear solid discs, complete with an Electronic Parking Brake (EPB) with Auto Hold as standard. It is fitted with 215/55 R18 Michelin e-Primacy low-rolling-resistance tyres. The turning radius is rated at 5.75 metres (partial data), with a kerb weight ranging between 1,840 kg and 1,920 kg. Selectable drive modes include Normal, Eco, and Sport.

Cabin & Equipment

The cockpit features an 8.8-inch digital instrument cluster and a 14.6-inch floating central touchscreen running on the ADiGO 5.0 intelligent operating system. The infotainment system supports AutoNavi GPS navigation, Over-the-Air (OTA) software updates, Carlink smartphone screen mirroring, and a four-zone voice command system.

For comfort and convenience, range-topping variants come equipped with front seats featuring 8-point massage, ventilation, and heating functions, while the rear seatbacks offer stepless recline up to 137 degrees. Other highlights include a 6.6-litre tri-mode heating and cooling on-board fridge, rear seatback tray tables, and a 2.15-square-metre panoramic glass roof. Audio is piped through a 9-speaker Belgian Premium sound system, accompanied by dual-zone automatic climate control with rear air vents as standard. Practicality-wise, boot space is rated at 427 litres and expands up to 987 litres with the rear seats folded.

Safety & ADAS

In the safety and driver assistance department, the AION V is armed with the ADiGO PILOT advanced driving assistance system. The hardware suite comprises an NVIDIA Orin-X chipset, a RoboSense 96-line solid-state variable-focus LiDAR, 5 millimetre-wave radars, and 11 HD cameras. Powered by end-to-end AI algorithms co-developed with Momenta, it enables mapless Navigation Driving Assist (NDA), handling automated car-following, highway ramp entry/exit, autonomous lane changes and overtaking, as well as pedestrian collision avoidance. Other Level 2 ADAS features include full-speed Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), Autonomous Parking Assist (APA), Lane Centring Assist (LCA), and a blind-spot camera display. Passive safety is bolstered by a body shell made of 66% high-strength and hot-stamped steel, engineered to meet China and Euro NCAP five-star safety standards, alongside six airbags and a 540-degree surround-view monitor as standard.

Market Performance & Reception

As one of GAC AION's volume-sellers, the AION V has maintained a strong presence in China’s competitive electric C-SUV market, recording a monthly high of 6,072 units in September 2025. Media outlets like Autohome have praised the AION V for its segment-busting practicality, highlighting its fully flat-folding 5-seat cabin configuration and expansive 707 mm rear legroom. In international markets, GAC has pushed models like the AION V and AION Y Plus into Southeast Asia and Europe, with the SUV charting as one of the best-selling EVs in Chile in 2024.

Built on a 400V architecture, the AION V successfully packages a rear multi-link independent suspension, NVIDIA Orin-X-powered ADAS suite, and lifestyle amenities like an on-board fridge without compromising on range or interior space—underscoring AION’s brand ethos of delivering pragmatic yet feature-packed EVs.
